Red Sun and Merlin Unchained are the most recent original stage works by one of the most acknowledged yet neglected dramatists of our time. Red Sun is a two-hander; tightly tethered within the classical unities of theme and space and the span of a single day. Merlin Unchained is an explosive; multitudinous epic; crossing continents and centuries and passing between worlds. Yet though technically so contrasting; both works speak with the same distinctive voice; offering an exhilarating and sometimes disturbing challenge to the cultural and political perceptions of a contemporary audience; and exploring alien worlds that; alarmingly; begin to become recognizable as our own. ldquo; David Rudkin is an odd man out amongst modern British dramatists. His plays hellip; are a unique blend of ritual and realism; of Artaudian imagery and bloodshot language..rdquo; Guardianldquo;hellip; the finest language to be heard in the theatre todayhellip;rdquo; Times Literary Supplementldquo;[Rudkin] explores the connection between the inner recesses of the personality and social and political forms with a courage that no one else has.rdquo; Listenerldquo; hellip; a fierce; uncompromising; obsessive writerhellip;rdquo; Guardianldquo; hellip; our greatest dramatic poethellip;rdquo; Observer

Great companion to Cleeves Shetland books and TV movies.By Lee KilloughIve enjoyed both Ann Cleeves Shetland books and the TV movies based on them; and this book *about* Shetland is equally satisfying. The kind you read fast first; then go back through more slowly to savor the scenery. Makes me want to go visit. I especially enjoyed the pictures and in them; spotting settings used in the TV movies. A "I know what book thats in" kind of moment.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Ann Cleeves Shows Us the Shetland Islands In Beautiful; Full Color.By Ronald E. ParsonsAuthor Ann Cleeves has probably done more to spread word about the existence of the Shetland Islands around the globe than any other person or institution. Her murder mysteries featuring Shetlands Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez have generated enough interest for them to have been translated extensively; and to have been chosen by BBC for TV presentation. All of the above has happened because Ms. Cleeves is an excellent formulator of mystery plots. Additionally her writing skills include an extraordinary ability to give her characters life via print; and to give her readers lots of pleasure.Recently I learned that Ms. Cleeves has written a 216 pg. non-fiction; hardcover book titled simply . I bought a new and unblemished copy because I wanted to know more about those northern islands from Ms. Cleeves herself; and to have to refer to during times to come. Her comments include lightly and briefly-tied-in bits about her detective stories as they relate to places in the islands. In the back of the book is a double-page map of the Islands. The map constitutes a useful illustration because the hardcover book measures 10 in. X 10 in. (X 3/4 in.) -- meaning that said map; in color; is 10 in. X 20 in. -- plenty large for easy viewing. is chock full of brilliant color photographs which measure quarter page; half page and full page. Only a few old photos are black and white. Ms. Cleeves prose is woven through the collected photographs causing the complete product; over-all; to be the venue of the authors chosen information; plus much beautiful illustration to please the eye.; though smaller than the typical coffee-table book; qualifies as such.
