Rabbit (NHB Modern Plays)

[PDF] Rabbit (NHB Modern Plays) by Nina Raine at Arts-Photography

Description

In this important new book the leading philosopher Jacques Ranciegrave;re continues his reflections on the representative power of works of art. How does art render events that have spanned an era? What roles does it assign to those who enacted them or those who were the victims of such events? Ranciegrave;re considers these questions in relation to the works of Claude Lanzmann; Goya; Manet; Kandinsky and Barnett Newman; among others; and demonstrates that these issues are not only confined to the spectator but have greater ramifications for the history of art itself. For Ranciegrave;re; every image; in what it shows and what it hides; says something about what it is permissible to show and what must be hidden in any given place and time. Indeed the image; in its act of showing and hiding; can reopen debates that the official historical record had supposedly determined once and for all. He argues that representing the past can imprison history; but it can also liberate its true meaning.

This is a result of years of dedicated research. While it is true that it talks more about Disney than the other studios; this shouldnt be surprising since Disney has the best track record for preserving their history than the other studios have and theyve enjoyed a longer legacy as well. Another factor is that Barrier himself said that he was only able to use only a fraction of the most interesting information he had. Barriers writing is filled with facts that arent found anywhere else all in a smooth and engaging narrative; complete with plenty of footnotes. Much of the information comes from interviews that Barrier conducted over the years with hundreds of people who worked in the industry. Some of these are available on his website. He posts more of them from time to time. This is a must read for the animation enthusiast2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Hollywood Cartoons is Excellent.By P. NeuhausHollywood Cartoons is an outstanding piece of work. Barrier is both thorough and opinionated -- which I consider a good thing. If youre writing a nonfiction book; dont just give me the facts; tell me what you think."Cartoons" was one of the sources for my own book; An Animation Miscellany. I have dozens of books on classic hand-drawn animation and only a few are worthy of being used for research. Hollywood Cartoons is on that short list.
