Description

William Logan has been a thorn in the side of American poetry for more than three decades. Though he has been called the “most hated man in American poetry;rdquo; his witty and articulate reviews have reminded us how muscular good reviewing can be. These new essays and reviews take poetry at its word; often finding in its hardest cases the greatest reasons for hope. Logan begins with a witty polemic against the wish to have critics announce their aesthetics every time they begin a review. “The Unbearable Rightness of Criticismrdquo; is a plea to read those critics who got it wrong when they reviewed Lyrical Ballads or Leaves of Grass or The Waste Land. Sometimes; he argues; such critics saw exactly what these books were—they saw the poems plain; yet often did not see that they were poems. In such wrongheaded criticism; readers can recover the ground broken by such groundbreaking books. Logan looks again at the poetry of Wallace Stevens; Frank Orsquo;Hara; and Philip Larkin; at the letters of T. S. Eliot; Elizabeth Bishop; and Robert Lowell; and at new books by Louise Gluuml;ck and Seamus Heaney. Always eager to overturn settled judgments; Logan argues that World War II poets were in the end better than the much-lauded poets of World War I. He revisits the secretly revised edition of Robert Frostrsquo;s notebooks; showing that the terrible errors ruining the first edition still exist. The most remarkable essay is “Elizabeth Bishop at Summer Camp;rdquo; which prints for the first time her early adolescent verse; along with the intimate letters written to the first girl she loved.

I read this to my six year old who loves all things non fiction; scientific adored this book. He did look at me curiously when we would go to page to page - he expected more "meat" to the information. While this relays the information in a way the young minds can grasp; it falls a bit short in length. It almost teases the reader with a bit of information but then goes to the next thing. That could be seen as a positive; however. When we finish reading one of the Baby Professor books; he is always wanting to know and learn more. Which catapults us into a search for more information on what we just read. I appreciate the help in the fostering of love of learning. On that; it definitely delivers! I wish there was more information contained in the book as well as the book ends so abruptly. With that said; I still highly recommend the book for young; curious children. If anything; it will build a curiosity that we as parents can supplement. I had an opportunity to read this book at a discount in exchange for my fair and honest review. The discount did not sway my opinion at all.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another Baby Professor with very vivid pictures.....By ElizabethAnother Baby Professor book with vivid pictures. There are about 200 books in this ebook series that is offered in the kindle store for either free or for .99cent;. You cant really go wrong with the books offered for free. There is a variety of subjects covered and most of the books follow about the same format. You can take a peek inside the books by clicking "Look Inside" and this is pretty much what you get in each book.I like this particular book. It seems the format for most of the Baby Professor books have a picture with a paragraph and facts on the page. Then the next page is just a photo. This book actually has a paragraph for each photo which makes it a little better. I love the photos and it would be nice if the books went into more detail but they are very basic books that I hope will get my kids interested in finding more about each subject.I plan on keeping these books on my iPad for down time for my kids when they get bored waiting different places like the doctors office or practice for a sibling.***** I received this ebook for free for my honest review. ******0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Love the format of this ebookBy rkreviewerLove the format of this ebook. Very easy to read. Simply highlights the features of the continent rather than a specific country like most similar topics. It really intrigues the reader with the stunning photos throughout. I really like how it does not target places that everyone has heard of and visited or added to their bucket list. It really provides an exceptional learning experience no matter what age the reader is. I would definitely recommend reading this book even if you do not plan to travel to these destinations so that you may become familiar with new places you may not have ever heard of. I really enjoyed this book especially since it was not setup like a travel guide. Instead it was simply a leisurely and relaxing nonfiction read. I received this product free for reviewing purposes; however my opinions are all my own.
