Renaissance Art: A Beginner's Guide (Beginner's Guides)

[audiobook] Renaissance Art: A Beginner's Guide (Beginner's Guides) by Tom Nichols in Arts-Photography

Description

On December 4; 1753; Gen. George Washington traveled to the junction of the Allegheny River and French Creek during one of his military excursions. There; the settlement was called Venango but soon became known as Franklin. Established in the heart of the original oil country in the 1740s; Franklin is the seat of Venango County. Once referred to as "the Nursery of Great Men;" it boasts a rich history of industry and railroads. Franklins historic district; listed in the National Register of Historic Places; includes businesses that have been staples in the city for over 100 years; such as Feldman Jewelers and Anderson Furniture. Today; Franklin takes great pride in its history and heritage. Franklins annual Applefest; the largest craft festival in western Pennsylvania; honors the travels of Johnny Appleseed; who planted his trees throughout the town during his journeys; and the bridge that spans the confluence of the Allegheny and French Creek is still known as Washington Crossing.

Never mind whether you will see the paintings mentioned in the book or not. The book will put the whole Renaissance movement in context no matter which cities and galleries you visit and enhance your appreciation of every painting you see. Without it. youll be one of those people who say. "I dont like religious art" or "seen one religious painting. seen em all". Make the effort. Read the book before you go. Get the most out of your vacation.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Best First Book on Ren ArtBy jlmagruderAs a nascent art historian. I recommend this book as THE introduction to Renaissance art. There are better books on the Italian or Flemish Renaissance. but this is the first coherent discussion of Renaissance art as a cultural phenomenon that encompassed both. The scholarship is cutting edge without being partisan. The readings of artistic works are historically appropriate but tell the larger story of the Renaissance as the beginning of modern European culture in a way that is true to the diversity of its origins. Even someone steeped in the material and texts of early modern Europe will gain new insights from this work.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Readable Art HistoryBy G.
