Description

New Zealand has produced one of the worldrsquo;s most vibrant film cultures; a reflection of the countryrsquo;s evolving history and the energy and resourcefulness of its people. From early silent features like The Te Kooti Trail to recent films such as River Queen in the new millennium; this book examines the role of the cinema of New Zealand in building a shared sense of national identity. The works of key directors; including Peter Jackson; Jane Campion; and Vincent Ward; are here introduced in a new light; and select films are given in-depth coverage. Among the most informative accounts of New Zealandrsquo;s fascinating national cinema; this will be a must for film scholars around the globe.

Presented in the photo-driven format of the Arcadia Publishing series; the book weaves together all the essential city history under the themes of the towns founding; the College; farming and industry; schools and churches; community leaders and organizations; neighborhoods; cyclones; parades; and more. The photos do a fine job of telling the story of this mid-prairie town but; even more; its the introductions and photo captions that paint a compelling picture and--on nearly every page--offer a surprising fact or twist about the town you thought you knew. Grinnells Billy Robinson breaking the long-distance flight record in 1914 in a plane he built himself? 5000 Spaulding cars made in Grinnell? A Department of "Applied Christianity" at the College in the 1800s? A Nobel-winning RNA researcher? The Tuesday Club (for a good time generally)! This little book has been fun to pick up for 10 minutes at a time; scan the faces and street scenes from 50 or 100 years ago; and invariably find a few sentences that sound like the beginning of a whole other book. I imagine if you live in or near Grinnell; youd need to have this on your bookshelf. It would also be great to get a copy before you visit family or friends in Grinnell (I personally look forward to stumping my brother-in-law with certain details about his hometown) or before you send your son or daughter off to Grinnell College.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
