He is a well known theatre director and author in his native Holland and now spends a majority of his time in New York. He is a teacher of university students as well; both here and abroad. If you are interested in new forms of theatre(as a student; teacher or professional) this is an essential book to read.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The magic of the theaterBy Louise V. NorthActing in Real Time by Paul Binnerts; director; dramaturg; and acting teacher; is an enthusiastic; user-friendly exposition on the joys - and trials - of acting. Extensively reorganized and reworked from the Dutch original; this important book is a "must read" for all those who are involved in the theater; but it should also appeal to theater lovers for its engaging view of the creative processes needed before that "magic" of the theater is achieved.Mr. Binnerts begins his book with thoughtful chapters on the craft of the actor; in particular as viewed through the lenses of Konstantin Stanislavski ("psychological realism") and Bertolt Brecht ("epic theater). In the main sections of the book; the author introduces his own concept of "real-time theater;" a technique for the postmodern theater; which adds the presence of the actor as himself to the Stanislavski-Brecht mix. How this may be done is lucidly explained - often with good humor - using examples and workshop exercises. There are fascinating sections on how an actor does what he does as well as on props; costumes; sound/media; light; rehearsal and performance in real-time theater. The book concludes with a concise elucidation of theater history through the ages to the present and an advocacy for real-time theater; at which the audience witnesses "the creation of the images that reflect the reality of the play; [and] the real-time actor restores the communal quality of the ritual that theater once was."
