Opera is often perceived to be characterised by excessive passions; sumptuous costumes; lavish sets; and ill-mannered divas. In reality; operas address the most fundamental and universal human concerns ndash; love; death; jealousy; greed and power. In this timeless introduction; Alexandra Wilson rescues the art form from fading into insignificance and reveals the reasons behind its lasting appeal.

And it speaks of broad. but somewhat universal concepts that can be applied across a wide range of areas such as old cities of Europe to the suburbs of America. Im just an American urban planning student. but I loved it. much more practical then some of the crap they teach us in school. Thanks to the authors0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Seriously - have a good look at this. One of a kind.By G. Lange-NielsenJust briefly. now. as I happened to find that the book is still available. on . I was referring it to a friend and colleague who had a particular question on behalf of his town planning department. Most questions regarding public/private interface are answered here! Vicente del Rio has already formulated (2012) most of my own evaluation. Let me add that I. too. was a postgraduate student (on sabbatical from Norway in 1982-83) at Oxford Brookes. and with three of the authors as teachers. Later. I have used it as an architect. urban designer and guest lecturer in Norway. as well as teaching the methods straight out of the book with visual examples (from around the world) while a senior lecturer for five years at Makerere University in Uganda [- architecture and urban design]. To date. this is one of my favourites on a rather expansive list of text-book literature. Unfortunately. it is little known in Norway (not for lack of propagation. on my part). Too bad it is getting to be a bit pricey for NOK... As for the content and usage. references have been appropriately made to The Image of the City (Lynch) and Townscape (Cullen). while I find few review references to Christopher Alexanders (et al) A Pattern Language? If that is correct. - let it be hereby corrected! I have been teaching these methods (and in reality. theories/views on our art/science metier) alongside and fundamentally complementing each other. And alongside the above-mentioned two classics. Having retired a few years back. I am glad to find that the manual is still in use and in stock. - and perhaps even reedited (if so. a major effort in terms of perseverance). Congratulations. Ian. Great practical bookBy Vicente Del RioI have been teaching urban design (a lot of studios) for many years. and my students love this book. It is what it claims. a "manual". so it is easy to use: enough theory discussion to get you going. and many practical applications and methods. I know the authors from the time I was a masters student at Oxford Polytechnic (now Brooks University) where they teach (or used to). back in 1980/81 when they were starting to test some of the ideas in this book. Since I started teaching in the US I have used this book (the first edition) constantly with my students because the book still fills huge gaps in the literature. I have not seen the new edition but I hope the authors have updated the literature review. the case studies. and made the visuals a bit better. I highly recommend this book for students. faculty. and practitioners alike. However. I must say I am particularly disappointed that the authors did not put out a new revised edition; the book deserves it (even in terms of graphic design to make the lay-out a bit more easy on the eye).
