Description

An exhilarating; multi-layered new play.mdash; The Guardian"Stirring and stylishly told . . . McCraneys crispest and most confident work."mdash;Daily News"Greatly affecting. . . . It takes a brave writer to set his language against the plaintive beauty of the hymns and spirituals . . . but McCraneys speech holds its own; locating poetry even in casual vernacular and again demonstrating his gift for simile and metaphor."mdash; The Village VoiceThe Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys is dedicated to the creation of strong; ethical black men. Pharus wants nothing more than to take his rightful place as leader of the schools legendary gospel choir; but can he find his way inside the hallowed halls of this institution if he sings in his own key? Known for his unique brand of urban lyricism; Tarrell Alvin McCraney follows up his acclaimed trilogy The Brother/Sister Plays with this affecting portrait of a gay youth trying to find the courage to let the truth about himself be known. Set against the sorrowful sounds of hymns and spirituals; Choir Boy premiered at the Royal Court in London before receiving its Off-Broadway premiere in summer 2013 to critical and popular acclaim.Tarell Alvin McCraney is author of The Brother/Sister Plays: The Brothers Size; In the Red and Brown Water; and Marcus; Or the Secret of Sweet. Other works include Wig Out!; set in New Yorks drag clubs; and The Breach; which deals with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. His awards include the 2009 Steinberg Playwrights Award and the Paula Vogel Playwriting Award.

The drawings themselves are meant to be copied for strengthening your anatomical skills. This is among my favorite drawing books and I am so happy to have found this treasure.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nice illustrationsBy Theoni LussosThe illustrations in this book; basically engravings from Frederick De Witt are glorious and are reminscent of the Charles Bargue and Jean-LAtilde;copy;on GAtilde;copy;rAtilde;me and if thats what you are looking for this is a good inexpensive way to get well presented anatomical drawings. It starts with simple body parts via chapter 1 to full blown engravings by the last. If instead you are looking for some explanation on how to use these drawings; ala sight size; the grid method; etc. you will find it sadly lacking as there is nothing mentioned about that at all; so you would have to supplement it with another book to learn the sight size methodCast Drawing Using the Sight-Size Approach or get the video by Judith KudlowClassical Painting: The Realist Sight Size Method with Judith Kudlow.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Just okBy CustomerThe illustrations are nice; but I wish there were accompanying text. I understand thats not the modern publishers fault. They are simply reprinting an old 17th Century drawing manual. But; its clear this book was meant to be used in a class or studio setting with instruction given by the master as to what to glean from a given illustration. While interesting as a historical artifact; if youre trying to learn to draw youre better off getting the books by Bridgman; Loomis; Bammes; Aristides; Speed; etc.
