Excellent guide for all playwrights; got me over writers blockBy ReaderAtlExcellent book; by a highly regarded playwright; theater professional and Emory professor. His "building blocks" approach to adaptation for the stage is clear and straightforward; and it helped me break through some writers block. Most chapters end with a series of discrete exercises that are short and contribute directly to whatever play you have in progress. I finished a play I had to submit by a specific deadline; by following the guidance in this book and just taking it step by step. His approach would be helpful for any playwright; not just one adapting an existing work.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Precise; practical; and extremely useful.By WordsmithVincent Murphy has of course run the very successful Brave New Works series of new play development at Theater Emory in Atlanta for many years; working with some of the best known and most successful playwrights in America; as well as being a much sought after director and an extremely popular teacher. To all these credits; he now adds author; and the theatrical world is much the richer for it. Murphy has written an extremely useful guide for anyone - professional; non-professional; student; teacher - who is interested in the process of theatrical adaptation. In precise; clear prose; which is both lucid and enjoyable; Murphy outlines his "six building blocks" structured approach which takes the reader from how to choose literary material to bringing their finished script to life. Despite the enormous popularity of theatrical adaptation across the world; I have never seen anyone actually attempt to codify the process; and Murphys short; entertaining volume fills a much needed gap. I cannot recommend it enough.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent ResourceBy Kathleen DonohuePage to Stage proved an important resource for my self-scripting solo performance class at Emerson College. The building blocks Murphy outlines offer simple and specific ways for students and professionals to engage with written text in order to adapt it for performance. It will become required reading for my course in the future. I give this book my highest recommendation.
