Understanding Urban Metabolism addresses the gap between the bio-physical sciences and urban planning and illustrates the advantages of accounting for urban metabolism issues in urban design decisions. Urban metabolism considers a city as a system; and distinguishes between energy and material flows as its components. Based on research from the BRIDGE project; this book deals with how the urban surface exchanges and transforms energy; water; carbon and pollutants in cities. This book also introduces a new method for evaluating how planning alternatives can modify the physical flows of urban metabolism components and how environmental and socioeconomic components interact. The inclusion of sustainability principles into urban planning provides an opportunity to place the new knowledge provided by bio-physical sciences at the centre of the planning process; but there is a strong need to bridge knowledge and practice; as well as for a better dissemination of research results and exchange of best practice. This book meets that need and provides the reader with the necessary tools to integrate an understanding of urban metabolism into urban planning practice.

The book brought me joy; tears; great memories and even motivated me to create my own small album of "Spice moments." A delight for those who love dogs and great photos!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Awesome experienceBy TCBeautiful experience! I have passed this book on to other owners of dogs who themselves appreciate the privilege of loving and being loved by their pet. Photographs are wonderful and creative.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful tool for veterinarians/animal grief clinics...By Elisabeth A. HegartyAs a person who works in the veterinary field; I read many aninal books. My Lucky Dog was one of the best books I have ever read about an animal and its connection with a nurturing; caring owner. I acquired the book as a gift from a staff member of the publisher and it is a gift that I have truly cherished. While the photographs in the book are stunning; the bond between the owner and the pet was what truly made the book special to me. Since I first read the book; I have ordered many copies and have given the book to many veterinarians. They are now buying the book for their clients and animal hospital waiting rooms. I have also given the book to a woman who leads a session for people who have lost their pets in pet loss grief counseling. She has recommended it to people attending her sessions. I have also given the book to several friends whose pets recently died. All have told me afterward that the book really helped them cope with the loss of their pet. Frankly; I think it should be on the MUST READ book for veterinary students to help them learn how to be sensitive to owners with pets who have to be euthanized; who have died or who have terminal illnesses. However; in addition to helping readers cope with death of a pet; the book was most of all a celebration of life - the life of a wonderful dog and the life of a loving owner. It is a book to be read over and over and over again.
