Description

This is the first-ever critical work on Jack Rosenthal; the award-winning British television dramatist. His career began with Coronation Street in the 1960s and he became famous for his popular sitcoms; including The Lovers and The Dustbinmen. During what is often known as the golden age of British television drama; Rosenthal wrote such plays as The Knowledge; The Chain; Spend; Spend; Spend and Ptang; Yang; Kipperbang; as well as the pilot for the series Londons Burning. This study offers a close analysis of all Rosenthals best-known works; drawing on archival material as well as interviews with his collaborators and cast members. The book places Rosenthals plays in their historical and televisual context. It does so by tracing the events that informed his writing; ranging from his comic take on the permissive society of the 1960s; through to the recession in the 1970s and Thatcherism in the 1980s. Rosenthals distinctive brand of humour and its everyday surrealism is contrasted throughout with the work of his contemporaries; including Dennis Potter; Alan Bleasdale and Johnny Speight; and his influence on contemporary television and film is analysed. Rosenthal is not usually placed in the canon of Anglo-Jewish writing but the book argues this case by focusing on his prize-winning Plays for Today; The Evacuees and Bar Mitzvah Boy.This book will appeal to students and researchers in Television; Film and Cultural Studies; as well as those interested in contemporary drama and Jewish Studies.

This book is too simple for anyone who has spent any time--even if it was years ago--playing the piano. Many of the songs have just a single note melody line and there are very few chords included. Have been able to improve with chords I remember. The book would be great for first-year piano students and has great illustrations that kids would like to color. I; however; am almost 60. Bought two other books--one for Complete Levels 2 3 that I am able to play fairly well (Alfreds Basic Piano Library Christmas Book) and one with more challenging arrangements that I wouldnt necessarily call east (Hal Leonard Ultimate Christmas) that I am finding most satisfactory.A First Book of Christmas Songs: 20 Favorite Songs in Easy Piano Arrangements (Dover Music for Piano)Alfreds Basic Piano Library: Christmas Book Complete Levels 2 3 (Top Hits! HaughtonHere are the 20 songs in the book: Angels We Have Heard on High; Jingle Bells; Away in a Manger; Joy to the World; Silent Night; Deck the Halls; O; Come All Ye Faithful; Song of the Birds; The Coventry Carol; O Come; O Come; Emmanuel; We Three Kings of Orient Are; The First Nowell; O Little Town of Bethlehem; What Child is This?; Hark! The Herald Angels Sing; O Christmas Tree; We Wish You a Merry Christmas; God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen; Pat-a-pan; Shepherds; O Shepherds. There are illustrations throughout the book for children to color; and all-in-all its not bad for the price. I do wish; however; that all the verses of the songs could have been included (only the first verse is given) so that you wouldnt have to buy a Christmas songbook separately or hunt down verses on the Internet.8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Not a beginner bookBy SarahI was really excited about this book b/c I got it free with s 4-for-3 deal. I was looking for a Christmas book to use with my beginning piano students. While this book is very simply arranged; many of the songs are not in the key of C Major. Several of them are in the key of F or G; even D! Some of the songs also have eighth notes. This is not beginning level! None of my beginners could play from the book. I didnt even get to use it for them this year. I recommend Alfreds Basic Piano Christmas books. Level 1 and Level 2Alfreds Basic Piano Course: Merry Christmas! (Alfreds Basic Piano Library) Level 2 seem to be graded much more appropriately.
