A good collection of the popular songs from the 1950sBy Pete from across the RiverI have quite a few of the Hal Leonard song books ... this one has a good collection of "top hits" from the 1950s. (Note that inclusion in the collection seems to consider versions that made it onto "top hits" lists during the period -- but some songs are also from earlier periods. This "New Decade Series" appears to replace a previous "Decade Series" ... so there is considerable overlap with the old series. Still; the new series has more songs than the old series song books. My rule of thumb is if I see 3 or 4 songs Ive been looking for; the song book is generally a better buy than purchasing sheet music for individual songs at $3 to $6 each.Note that EZ Play Today notation is a system the makes easy-to-read sheet music with simplified arrangements* in "lead sheet" style. (Lead sheets feature the treble cleft only.) This style of notation is good for the student musician or for those who prefer to read music without reading glasses (if you need them). It is particularly useful with a more advanced keyboard that provides a variety of backing styles. Intermediate or advanced pianists might prefer the "standard" notation books. (Many Hal Leonard titles offer both "EZ-Play" and standard notation choices.)The "simplified arrangements" eliminate the lead in or intro on most songs. They also are frequently changed to a key with fewer sharps and flats and may have eliminated more difficult passages by simplifying (eliminating) some notes. Sharps and flats are all signed; without key signature. It is interesting to compare the EZ-Play arrangements with arrangements from the Hal Leonard "lead sheet" books (where every song is translated to the key of C). While the "lead sheet" books tend to have more advanced (but still "easy") arrangements; the EZ-Play books sometimes use a "better" key for a song than the "everything in C" books.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. but that my 12 year old can play and feel very satisfied. RecordingsBy CustomerThis book is basically a lead sheet with a full TB piano part added; but the piano part doesnt always follow originial recordings. For instance; the left hand rarely follows the walking bass line of many of these old rock n roll tunes. The result is a transcription that is not always perfectly authentic; but that my 12 year old can play and feel very satisfied.Recordings: the mp3s that come along with the book are OK but not great. They sound like midi files that have had real guitars added on top. I would LOVE to have the original midi files along with the mp3s. That way I could slow down; change keys; etc as I play these songs with students. Unfortunately; they are not included.Overall; Im glad I bought it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
