Jopson aka Bobby EllisI had the privilege of hearing a lot of the stories in this book from Charlie himself back in 1962 when my dad and I went to see him at the Baltimore Tavern in Philly! As an aspiring guitarist/vocalist myself who at the time was pursuing a record deal I found that conversation fascinating. Now all this time later I find this book to be a compelling read and frankly couldnt put it down as it chronicled all of the events in his career as I recalled them. Charlie is truly one of the nicest guys youll ever meet and deserves all the success hes achieved because he did it the hard way not like today where you can have "overnight success" through fabricated shows like American Idol or The Voice etc.Given the fact that I eventually signed with Cameo-Parkway myself in 1964 as Bobby Ellis I had no idea the label was heading south at that time until I read the details in this book.Charlie describes all that he went through quite vividly and it is truly a rags to riches back to rags back to riches story! Ive seen Charlie perform at several other venues during my life and can tell you straight out that he is a perfectionist in his craft not only in his stage presence and professional sartorial image but in his superb guitar technique! Quite simply hes one of the best! And for those who think Charlie is "old school" check out his latest recording called Baby Doll for a contemporary high energy rocker you wont believe! Also a great companion item to this book is the DVD of his life simply called Fabulous! Buy them both and you wont be disappointed!6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Just like talking to Mr. Gracie!By Nanette KinslowI have been fortunate enough to meet Charlie Gracie on several occasions and found him to be genuine and friendly. with a touch of class. Reading this memoir is like meeting him face to face. It reads in an open and friendly manner as if you were enjoying a cup of coffee together. If you are a fan of Charlie Gracie and his music this a wonderful look into his life and his background as well as a glimpse into his character. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well written life story. an honest history of rock-and-roll from someone who has been there from the beginning and of course anyone who loves the music of this talented musician.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An excellent riveting bookBy George R. NettletonAn excellent riveting book. I could hardly put it down. Nice balance between an "I was there" insight and historical and genealogical background setting the scene. Truly an overlooked pioneer of Rock Roll. Congratulations to John Jackson for putting this out. to Charlie Gracie his son. for the interviews and desire to have this story before the public. An excellent insight into the workings of Rock Roll-the ups and downs and the fickleness of both the industry and us. the American fans. Great read.
