IsselMy interest in this book is extremely personal; as my dad; John Mallick (photo below); worked there for years--once in charge of the aviary and finally as assistant head keeper at the end of his 30 year career (1970). The photos bring back delightful memories of the many hours we spent in the zoo; meeting the very friendly and caring keepers and being treated to rare events; such as playing with the lion and tiger cubs in the hideaway under Monkey Island. This is the first history I have seen of the zoo; from its creation to the present day. It is a wonderful record of an amazing place. It belongs in the library of anyone interested in this part of San Francisco history. (One addition I might make: The photo on page 74 depicts "a zoo official" opening the mouth of the hippo Puddles. That official is Carey Baldwin; director of the zoo in the 1940s and 50s.) Thank you; Katherine!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
