Description

St. Matthews; once a prominent neighborhood of Louisville; is now a fourth-class city within metro Louisville. The first settlers came to the area in the 1780s; and for more than a century St. Matthews was largely an agricultural area where farmers specialized in growing potatoes. By 1900; a commercial district had grown at the intersection of several roads; known locally as the Point; and the land devoted to farming was gradually taken over by new commercial and residential development. After the great flood of 1937 and World War II; Shelbyville Road; the principal eastwest street in St. Matthews; was the site of a commercial boom that included malls and other shopping centers; automobile dealerships; and a wide variety of other businesses. Today; the town of St. Matthews is a vibrant economic and cultural center that attracts people from all parts of metropolitan Louisville.

BUHRHelped to combine a little historical perspective upon the growth and times of Waterloo and famous places. Had seen a few of these cards while growing up; but was not fully aware of the importance and value of some of these regarding the overall development of commerce and visitors to the region. Provided a glimpse back in time to those specially persevered photos in time that magically transformed a rural town to big time community with impactful agriculture; industry; transportation; and entertainment to this region of Iowa. Grew up not far from the Electric Park and the National Dairy Cattle Congress Grounds; and attended it frequently as a youth each year. The postcards recreate a nostalgic and reoccurring memory of many places and moments spent growing up there. Those of these Kodak-styled moments help to remind me today of the enjoyable times together with friends when we traversed the RR track bridge over the Cedar River at San Souci in order to visit the Cattle Grounds; tractor tents; amusement park; and dairy barns during an early time in my life.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Waterloo Postcard History: Slightly DisappointingBy Richard SteffenI grew up twenty miles from Waterloo during the 1940s and 1950s. Most anytime my folks and I visited Waterloo; railroad tracks were everywhere. Browsing through this book; rails are hardly visible. Repetition of one particular downtown building grew tiresome. Many of the images were less than sharp. The total of the book was okay; but I was expecting more.
