This is what the very best publications in architectural history look like. The building sample here is surprisingly rich for such a small geographic area. The Federal style; executed in grey stone; dominates here. In fact; I was amazed to see how conservative the stylistic developments were in this part of the country. The quality of the book; like the buildings it describes; is very high. The chapters are arranged by town and rural district; and the most excellent examples of the stone-built Federal style are included. Color photography is also of high artistic quality; and the essays which frame each entry are written by insightful experts in the field. The photography is comprehensive; so related hand-drawn architectural plans; elevations; and details are few. This is a book not only for people who love old houses; but is also for architects; historians; restorationists and craftsmen with an interest in this style and location. The book is handsomely printed and bound with the highest quality book-making materials by Syracuse University.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
