Savannah (Postcard History Series)

Description

From 1631 to the present; Old Orchard Beach has had a singularly rich history among New Englands summer communities. Old Orchard was originally a small seacoast farming community nestled on the shore of Saco Bay. When the railroad came in 1873; the coast exploded into one of the grandest Victorian settings in Maine. It boasted famous religious camp meetings; transatlantic flights; big bands; big fires; harness racing; and automobile racing on the beach. The Kennedy family; Bette Davis; Fred Allen; Rosa and Carmen Ponselle; Pierre Trudeau; and Charles Lindbergh all rejuvenated themselves in this community. Old Orchard Beach is still a vacation mecca; and residents and visitors alike will find enjoyment and education within these pages.

Creative Way to Step Back in Time to Historical Savannah.By S. GladskiMy friend and I are planning a trip this year to experience the rich history of Savannah. When I learned about this book I thought it would be perfect to take along with us. so I bought two! The author provides a brief description and dates as to when the hotels and businesses in the postcards were built and occupied. and if they were destroyed. what has taken their place. A great tool for a walking tour of the City. I love the occasional glimpse into the past when the author describes what the sender wrote on the card. and where they were sending it. I found myself wrapped up in the history. and read it cover-to-cover right away. A clever. well-written book by someone that obviously knows and appreciates Savannah. Thanks Whip!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Early History of Savannah told in Detailed PicturesBy Laura KiddI recently visited my daughter in Savannah. She has always been interested in exploring the history of the cities where she currently lived. and because of her. I became interested in the city and the part it played in Southern history. After looking at several local history books. this one was by far the best. The postcards are fascinating in themselves. but the historical explanations of the pictures and their significance in the development of Savannah illustrate the incredible amount of research done by the author. Every postcard tells a story. I had no intention of buying a book about Savannah. but this one was irresistible. Its a book youll want to keep and look at many times over.
