By the 1600s; the cult of the Immaculate Conception had become so popularized that the Hapsburg monarchy issued a decree in defense of the Virgins purity. In a climate of political disharmony; however; this revered iconmdash;often pictured as the passive; chaste; and pious mother of Godmdash;would become an archetype of paradox within the Spanish imagination. In The Comedia of Virginity; Mirzam Perez underscores how the character of the Virgin Mary was represented on the theater stage. Following a concise account of the historical; academic; and political forces operating within Hapsburg Spain; Perez dissects three comediasmdash;three-act productions featuring both drama and comedymdash;and draws out their multivalent interpretations of Mary. In their own ways; these secular comedias reproduced an uncommonly empowering feminine vision while making light of the Virgins purity. The Mary of the stage was an active; sinuous; even sensual force whom playwrights would ultimately use to support a fracturing monarchy.

Very cute book; one of my favorite in this series (although there are some typos)...By ElizabethIve read and reviewed many of the Baby Professor ebooks. This one is one of my favorite however; there are some typos in this book. One sentence is completely missing the first letter of a sentence and a period at the end. Big deal? Not to me but this book and the others as well could use some reviewing and editing. Im still giving this one 5 stars because it has fun facts. They also go a little "advanced" but explain the terms they are using. For example: The banana slug is a detritivores; or decomposer. Then it goes on to explain more. One reason I mention this is not all of the books in this series do this.There are about 200 books by Baby Professor and although there are mistakes in some; I really like them. Some are offered free and some are 99 cents. The pictures are amazing. One thing I will mention that bothers me is that in the Whale book; it states that whales and manatee are the only mammals who live their entire lives in the ocean. Im not sure why dolphins and porpoises are left out but it makes me wonder what other "facts" in these book are not correct?Overall; I like this book and the others and I like to have them my iPad for the kids to flip through and read and hopefully spark some interest.*****I received this ebook for free for my honest review.*****1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Bright; clear and fun photos that kids and adults a like will LOVE!By Jones FamilyI just received the Yellow Animals On The Planet e-book and had it load on my ipad kindle app. This was actually my first kindle book that I personally have gotten. I was very impressed with the photos and choices of animals that they used in the book. I really like that there was a very wide range in the choices of animals that they choose to use. There is a description of each kind of animal in the book with some basic information about that animal.I would put the age range for this book if you are getting it for your kids; to be for ages up to 8 or 9. I think beyond that there would need to be more in depth information about the animals as there small descriptions about each kind. All in all though; the photos themselves are very fun to look at and they give you just enough information to learn about the animal if you did not know anything before. I look forward to showing this book to my kids tomorrow because I know that they will enjoy seeing all of the bright fun yellow colors. I think we can even use this in our home school as a great way to start to identify some of the animals and learn some basic information about them.I did receive this ebook for free in return for my honest and unbiased review. I give this book a five out of five stars because it does a great job with its bright fun photos and descriptions of each animal. As a teacher of elementary students; I would love to incorporate this ebook into a small group activity where I present a main idea or topic to the whole class and then they break up in small groups and discover more material on their own. My mind was continuously racing as I read through this book thinking of different projects I could make on this topic. It is the perfect age group to let them use a kindle to explore and what a better way to do so than with this ebook! I will totally let other teachers know of this opportunity and will keep this seller in mind with other ebooks available.
