Secrets of the Japanese Art of Warfare: From the School of Certain Victory

[DOC] Secrets of the Japanese Art of Warfare: From the School of Certain Victory by Thomas Cleary in Arts-Photography

Description

Frank Lloyd Wright firmly believed that "life could be formed anew if new form could be brought to its setting; architecture." His revolt against customary architectural design was shared by rugged individualist Fred C. Robie; who chose Wright to build his dream house in 1908. In this painstakingly researched and illuminating account of the design and construction of the Robie home; a noted architectural authority presents an in-depth study remarkable for clarity and thoroughness. At age 28; Robie had become a highly successful businessman who conceived the idea of building a grand home in his native Chicago. He insisted on a design incorporating features that were innovative for the day: hallways and stairwells situated to conserve valuable space; rooms that suggested feelings of airiness; and narrow trimmings on doorways and windows; among others. Robies wish to shape space as a means of personal expression meshed with Wrights own feelings and spirit. The two strong-willed men formed a perfect union: Robie had found his architect and Wright his ideal client.Drawing on revealing family documents; including a 1958 interview with Robie; and a host of other sources; the author has compiled an authoritative photo-history; enabling the reader to witness each stage and various transformations of a landmark of modern architecture. The text is enhanced by 160 carefully selected illustrations; including perspectives and elevations; cross-sectional drawings; floor plans; designs for windows; carpets; lighting fixtures and other furnishings; plus recent and historic photographs. Now students; architects; any lover of fine buildings can watch an architectural masterpiece take shape in this profusely illustrated history of the house Wright himself labeled "a source of world-wide architectural inspiration."

Very good book for those interested in practical Japanese warfare strategy ...By Matthew BrownVery good book for those interested in practical Japanese warfare strategy and weapon use. The original author didnt quite elaborate as much as he could have on some techniques. and the translating author (Thomas Cleary) left some footnotes that were fairly difficult for me to understand. but for the most part. I really learned a lot from this book.6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. yamamoto kansuke!!! heiho/strategy of the takeda samurai/shinobiBy sookiethis is a excellent translation of "the school of certain victory" which yamamoto produced many strategy and secret scrolls and densho including the heiho okugisho and the rodanshu which many claim were main books for the takeda samurai and shinobi (although the sanada ryu shinobi seemed to went on a different path im sure they listened to yamamoto to certain extent as a couple shinobi schools came from this area)back to the book mr. cleary does a great job of translating putting everything in english even the "fighting parts of the manual" he also adds his own notes which is something the more expensive and harder to find heiho okugisho does not(it stays a tad more traditional) and i have matched them up together that pretty much what this book is with a few adds.a great buy for any martial artist thats wants more on traditional heiho from a real samurai clan that also employed shinobi no mono. not just samurai ninja troops. hmmm...that word just dont work. but confirmed..samurai from this provice were allowed to learn some ninjutsu. and some of it is in this book. buy it!-i would also like to add the takeda ryu has been put back together with a 44th headmaster.-1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very practical fighting advice.By victorGives an insight of warfare from an actual strategist/warrior.Nothing "mystical " like those books attributing realistic fighting victoriesto metaphysical. zen-like reasons. Down to earth book.
