Major Barbara is a three act play by George Bernard Shaw. The story involves an idealistic young woman; Barbara Undershaft; who is engaged in helping the poor as an official in the Salvation Army in London. For many years Barbara and her siblings have been estranged from their father; Andrew Undershaft; who now reappears as a rich and successful munitions maker. Undershaft the father gives money to the Salvation Army; which offends Major Barbara who does not want to be connected to his wealth. However; the father argues that poverty is a worse problem than munitions; and claims that he is doing more to help society by giving his workers jobs and a steady income than Major Barbara is doing to help them by giving them bread and soup.

The work inspires one to consider the impact of a culture that celebrates it innovators/creators to excess; while neglecting the mechanisms that establish and support the infrastructure that directs its development.By adding a previously unseen component in the form of the art dealer to the archetypical vision of the lone artist with a paintbrush standing before the canvas; the book and its interpretation of the collected data reframe my assumptions of the role of the inspired innovator. The function of those who move the Market on what is produced within this specific context establishes obvious and important parallels between this an nearly any other market; including my role within my own business community. Quite simply; the book is a real pleasure read and contemplate.
