Great beginners bookBy priz_mIts been only a few months since I started sewing and in this little time Ive "hoarded" a silly amount of sewing books that are meant for more experienced sewers. I got my copy of "sewing in a straight line" because the projects seemed perfect for my current sewing skills. I have to say I love it! The projects are super cute and its nice to see modern home sewing projects for once. I love the fact that it features a quilting project which Ive also been curious to learn about. I would strongly recommend it to beginner sewers. This would make a terrific gift paired with a sewing machine.29 of 30 people found the following review helpful. measurements do not work with the dress projectBy gym_houndAt first. I loved this book. I made the one-hour skirt twice and loved it. Taking your body measurements and then cutting two rectangles from which to create the skirt doesnt work 100% because the skirt ends up extremely poofy (even for a poofy skirt. which I like). I had to take inches off the suggested measurement and its still poofier than a poofy skirt. My major problem. however. is the "shirred to the max" dress. This does not work. The first time I made it following the measurements exactly. I ended up with a shirred dress that was so. so huge--MUCH bigger than my body. It was like I was holding a barrel around my body and it could have fit someone about 8 or 9 sizes bigger than me--NOT exaggerating. I took to my sewing machine and sewed a rectangle off each side. discarding the beautiful french seams I worked so hard to get. The second time I attempted the dress. I subtracted many inches off the rectangle measurement and it was still too big. The problem with making a dress out of a rectangle is that. even with the elastic. the upper part of the dress does not get small enough to stay up. and when you reduce the rectangles size. the bottom becomes too tight and bunches up in weird spots. I give up! I guess Ill use this book to make too poofy one-hour skirts because they look ok. I cant be the only one having this measurement problem with the dress. Im going to look at a different book.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Ready for Project Runway!By chemistrymonkey21I just learned how to sew and needed a really simple book with projects I can do. This one is great. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. The clothes arent amazing or anything. but the skirt Ive made looks pretty good. Im slowly working my way through it and have learned a lot during the time. If youre just started out (or somewhat experienced) get this book. Your skills will improve quickly and youll feel like you want to try out for Project Runway.
