For Italian city builders more than a thousand years ago; the urban realm was the great theater where their best aspirations were played out; the place where society said the most substantial things about who they were and what they longed for. In this masterful blend of art and cultural history; architect David Mayernik reveals how the very different cities of Venice; Rome; Florence; Siena; and Pienza were all literally designed to be both models of the mind and images of heaven. Mayernik takes the reader on a journey into the past in Timeless Cities; but he also explains why these city-building ideas remain relevant today. For those travelling on vacation or appreciating the art and architecture of Italy from home; Mayernik helps bring the wonder and beauty of the Renaissance mind a little closer.

My grandfather worked for the city and sent all his 7 kids to St. Pauls for schooling. My dad got a kick out of the book and since hes not a reader he was very pleased it was mainly a book of pictures. I think its great that authors compile books like these to chronicle history for those of us who werent there and to bring back memories for those who were. The picture is of my grandfather when he took a trip to the Catskills. Just thought someone who would be interested in this book might recognize him.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I found that my great grandmother lived in East Harlem in 1914-16By C. KramerIn researching my family history; I found that my great grandmother lived in East Harlem in 1914-16. I didnt know anything about the area and this book provided a nice overview of the areas history with photos. I would have liked a little more on history of the period when my relative lived there; but I understand the nature of this book covering an extended period of time in a set format (I also have written a book for Arcadia Publishing). Nice job overall.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful bookBy D. FISCHERA wonderful book. Brings back memories of my years working in East Harlem.
