Catastrophic life exemplifiedBy HHKittos translations are not intended to sound contemporary; for Kitto feels that "the modern doctrine that a new translation must be contemporary in style is fallacious in theory and dull in practice." The tone; like that of the original; is serious and the style formal. Kitto prepares the "Antigone" and "Electra" for use on the stage; and he reproduces in the "Antigone"; as far as the limitations of English allow; Sophocles rhythms in the choral odes; which are meant to be sung. This volume satisfies age-old artistic demands: it delights and instructs. Its explanations of Greek meter and of Anglicized Greek names make the work almost unique among translations of ancient poetry. However; the Kindle version which I downloaded was missing several blocs of text; showing only the first letter or two of each line.
