Prima tragedia scritta dal grande autore in un periodo compreso tra il 1816 e il 1820; fu dedicata al suo amico Claude Fauriel; noto critico letterario francese; e fu pubblicato in un periodo di grande turbolenza nei rapporti tra italiani e austriaci. Infatti in questopera Manzoni condanna in maniera ferma; a tratti feroci; le discordie che impedivano lunificazione del paese; riprendendo anche temi politici oltre che storici che si ritrovano ciclicamente nei suoi scritti. Scritta in endecasillabi e ponendo lattenzione su un contesto storico che rimanda ai problemi morali legati a un atto di generositagrave; che si scontra contro le rigide regole della politica e della diplomazia; la tragedia ebbe una critica discordante; che divise i critici. Tra coloro che espressero parole di elogio nei suoi confronti Silvio Pellico e Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Allinterno - come in tutti i volumi Nobel - gli "Indicatori" per consentire al lettore un agevole viaggio dentro il libro.

Meticulously researched and detailed. it tells the story of the way these much maligned marine predators were first characterized by sailors. then turned into the monsters of the human imagination in modern literature and films. Finally. it documents the massacre of sharks for the shark fin soup market that is currently driving them to extinction.The artwork that illustrates it also covers a wide span of history. and turns it into a collectors dream. I am honoured to be able to say that four of my paintings. and my book on shark ethology and behaviour. are included.
