PA. 30.000 people lived within one square mile surrounded by coal mining collieries. Plenty of bars too! The town was settled by immigrants from Poland. Lithuania. Germany. Italy. etc. Nationalities lived in their own part of town and went to their own churches. Nearly all the men and boys worked hard in the coal mines. This book is a treasure trove of pictures of the history of my home town. The Chapters are:Coal Miners and CollieriesFrom The Old CountryCity Of ChurchesMain And Centre StreetsSaturday In ShenandoahChampionsShenandoah SpiritAdversity And DisasterIn HonorIncluded are photos of coal miners. places of business. many churches. sports teams. community leaders. and disasters such as fires that have destroyed significant sections of Shenandoah. But true to the spirit of the region. the town always recovered. Shenandoah is known for being the birthplace of the Dorsey Brothers of big band fame. Mrs. Ts pierogies. and kielbasi. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the coal region and a great companion to Andy Ulicnys book My Shenandoah 1966.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Shenandoah DecendantBy sussex1Since my Moms family is from Shenandoah. I wanted to get this book. My Grandfather came from the Ukraine at the turn of the 1900s. Like most he worked in the mines and died as a result of it from Black Lung. A good historical journey of the borough and the people. Some of it Ive seen in other sources but the author has complied it here. Lots of photos. Something nice to share with your family and pass it down so that they hopefully can see the sacrifices of their ancestors and how life was in that era.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
