[PDF] Sing Sing Prison (Images of America) by Guy Cheli at Arts-Photography

Description

Much more than the typical vacation destination; Key West combines a free-spirited ambiance with magnificent coral reefs; a unique historic legacy with an enduring artistic sensibility. For centuries; explorers and adventurers; immigrants and entrepreneurs; artists and wanderers have come to the island oasis; and today Key West; a city like no other; is home to them all. Through hurricanes; fires; labor strikes; and the tourism boom; the community of Key West has sustained a unique way of life and attracted a wide variety of people to its shores; including such famous figures as writers Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams; President Harry Truman; and musician Jimmy Buffett. Whether strolling through the downtown historic district; searching eclectic shops for one-of-a-kind treasures; enjoying a piece of key lime pie; or participating in the look-alike contest during Hemingway Days; Key West offers endless opportunities for pleasure. The landmarks; the people; and the continuing story of Key West are the entertaining subject of this new photographic tribute.

Wonderful book. except for one baffling errorBy dave in milwaukeeThis is a wonderful treasury of rare photographs that really takes the reader inside the mysterious world of Sing Sing. I only found two faults with the book. One is that I would have liked to have seen a few more "modern" photos. from the period of 1930 to 1960.The second was a glaring error involving a photo that did not belong in this book. Page 94 shows a photo of the infamous "thrill killers" Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb arriving at prison in 1924. The caption says. "Leopold was sentenced to 99 years in Sing Sing." But the prison shown in the photo is Joliet Penitentiary in Illinois. not Sing Sing. In Neither Leopold nor Loeb had any connection to Sing Sing. They committed their crime in their hometown. Chicago. where they were also tried and convicted. They served their entire prison time in Illinois. first at Joliet and then at Statesville (Loeb was killed in a prison fight at Statesville in 1936. and Loeb was finally paroled from that prison in 1958).
