I thoroughly enjoy reading the stories and biographies in the book. The authors didnt just write about the Beacons of Light that were well known in the community; but also those little known Beacons who contributed in so many other ways to the black community. This book is not just for native Alexandrians; but an asset to our continuing afro-american legacy. Being raised in Philadelphia; Pa; many of us did not experience the Jim Crow laws that were prevalent in the South. A Must ReadBy shayne johnsonHaving lived my entire life in Alexandria; Ive learned a little about the impact African Americans had in this city. Ive heard certain names; seen certain places; etc; without truly knowing the history. This book does that. It was a joy to see such a book being published; and I couldnt wait to order it. When I did order; my book was going to be shipped on or around July 10. Lo and behold; it shipped on the 5th; and I received on the 6th !....Reading through the book; I see names I recognize; and can now place names with their individual contributions to our society.
