Considered the "Best Ride in New York City;" the Staten Island Ferry has been immortalized over the years in art; literature; film; and music. In the 19th century; cross-bay ferry riders complained of dangerous and unreliable private service. On October 25; 1905; the newly incorporated City of New York assumed ownership of the service; and the Borough class--the Brooklyn; Bronx; Richmond; Queens; and Manhattan ferryboats--was introduced. These were the largest ferries on the East Coast and made the crossing in 22.5 minutes. Today; the ferry is recognized as a New York icon and a symbol of the borough. A favorite destination for tourists; the Staten Island Ferry carries 22 million passengers annually. On a typical day; 109 trips move about 70;000 people across the harbor; making the Staten Island Ferry one of the most reliable forms of mass transit in the city.

He walks you through some basic steps and functions; and on to more advanced features on the camera and dabbles in photo editing. Its also full of tips. I have learned a LOT from this book and I would recommend it to any beginning digital photographer! In fact Im going to be loaning it to my mom; who has just purchased a Canon Powershot SX520. Recommend; but only for beginners who want to start understanding what their camera is capable of and work into the intermediate level.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Simply the BestBy G. HalcombThis is a uniquely excellent resource for anyone from beginner through intermediate photographer. Both my wife and I find ourselves returning to this book for inspiration and instruction. It is by far the most accessible and just plain enjoyable photography book Ive ever owned.Starts with a short section on generic camera controls and operation (it is not; however; a detailed "buttons" manual). Section 2 covers composing; focus; and lighting with plenty of before and after picture comparisons. Section 3 has "assignments" to practice; including thought provoking example photos. The next several sections cover more detailed and advanced topics; explained clearly and well illustrated.11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Succinct and enjoyableBy West Coast book loverI love this book. The author doesnt spend too much time on any one topic; the photos are all full color; the paper and binding are top quality. I appreciate that his writing style is warm and friendly without being too folksy (I hate folksy jokes in how-to books...like the "For Dummies" books; for example). He covers all the usual topics -- portraits; backlighting; exposure; etc) but in an accessible way. Some chapters only apply if you have a full DSLR; but it was easy to identify those chapters. Im using a semi-manual point and shoot and I found all of the chapters helpful. An informative appendix lists the settings for every photo in the book; which is helpful when youre trying to figure out how a particular shot was done.I cant say enough good things about this book.
