Sun Ra: Interviews Essays

[ebooks] Sun Ra: Interviews Essays by John Sinclair at Arts-Photography

Description

A bewitching play by Jez Butterworth; author of the global smash-hit Jerusalem. Premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in 2012. On a moonless night in August when the sea trout are ready to run; a man brings his new girlfriend to the remote family cabin where he has come for the fly-fishing since he was a boy. But shes not the only woman he has brought here #150; or indeed the last... A delicately unfolding puzzle... all of it is wrapped in marvelous language... extraordinary. The Times One of the best productions of the year... a magnetically eerie; luminously beautiful psychodrama. Time Out Strange; eerie; tense... Butterworth possesses a singular talent. Guardian

Two page Introduction. 185 pages of interviews.articles.and eight pages of color and bw photographs and graphics. There are four pages of notes about the contributors.and an index. This slim but important volume is interesting because of early interviews (1966) with Sun Ra and others.and period articles on Ra.his music.and philosophies. The depth in these writings will open up Ras music and thinking to many people only familiar with his music.and will help them come to better terms with his sometimes impenetrable style. The observations on Ra.combined with interviews all help to contribute a foundation for those interested in Sun Ra.and the era he recorded and performed in. One article by editor John Sinclair (whom John Lennon campaigned to get out of jail) is about Sun Ra on film.which many people are not familiar with. Also by Sinclair is Ras obituary.reprinted from the newspaper. There is an interview with Jerry Dammers on his Sun Ra musical project.and with Wayne Kramer (MC5) on Ras music. The poet Amiri Baraka talks about Ra in a poem thats in a free form much like Ras music. These are just a sample of what is to be found in this book.thats been collected by Sinclair. While his music is sometimes challenging.this collection of writings on Ra will go some distance in helping explain Sun Ras approach to life and music. The editor has done all Ra listeners a favor by collecting these far-flung writings into one fine book. Its at times interesting.puzzling.yet illuminating-just as Ras music was and is. This book is a good companion to both "Sun Ra The Immeasurable Equation".and "Space Is The Place The Lives and Times of Sun Ra". With this new book.another piece of the puzzle that is Sun Ra is in place. It helps shed more light into the life and times of a truly unique musician.philosopher.writer.and self-confessed visitor from outer space.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. OK -- Not Much DepthBy johnnyjewelThank the stars for John Sinclair. confirming his reverence for Mr. Ra. but I was a little disappointed in the actual volume of material in this book. I have found many more articles that let one know more about who Sun Ra was. That said. I am always interested in Ra info. and this book had some material I hadnt run across before.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Book - ESSENTIAL for any Sun Ra fanBy King RaohThis book is very well done and contains very interesting info about Sun Ra and the Arkestra from the people who were THERE. It even includes poetry by Amiri Baraka and a great essay about the recordings that have been released since Sun Ras passing and a few that we might be able to look forward to. It was worth every penny. If you are a fan of jazz or music of any type. I highly recommend that you make the effort to see the Sun Ra Arkestra directed by Marshall Allen live. They are still touring and put on a show unlike anything else.
