With his usual wit and eacute;lan; esteemed historian Peter Gay enters the contentious; long-standing debates over the romantic period. Here; in this concise and inviting volume; he reformulates the definition of romanticism and provides a fresh account of the immense achievements of romantic writers and artists in all media.Gayrsquo;s scope is wide; his insights sharp. He takes on the recurring questions about how to interpret romantic figures and their works. Who qualifies to be a romantic? What ties together romantic figures who practice in different countries; employ different media; even live in different centuries? How is modernism indebted to romanticism; if at all?Guiding readers through the history of the romantic movement across Britain; France; Germany; and Switzerland; Gay argues that the best way to conceptualize romanticism is to accept its complicated nature and acknowledge that there is no ldquo;single basketrdquo; to contain it. Gay conceives of romantics in ldquo;families;rdquo; whose individual members share fundamental values but retain unique qualities. He concludes by demonstrating that romanticism extends well into the twentieth century; where its deep and lasting impact may be measured in the work of writers such as T. S. Eliot and Virginia Woolf.

But it does fall down in some of its historical persective and misses the opportunity to direct readers to solid technical information.Chapter 1 under Emergence of Green building Guidelines and Regulations misses the impact the federal regulations under EPAct 1992 and 2005 had on requiring state and local jurisdictions to adopt energy efficiency codes. It misses the fact that ASHRAE Standard 90-75 was the first building energy efficiency standard in the USA and had the impact of reducing commercial building energy use by 27% (per an Arthur D Little study. It misses the impact that EISA (Energy Independance and Security Act) of 2007 had on all 500;000 plus Federal Buildings which will significantly impact the energy marketplace.Does not even include the acronym ASHRAE in Appendix B even though the American Society of Heating; Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers has developed the Standards behind all of the building codes in the USA for energy; comfort and indoor air quality and provides the underpinings of the USGBC LEED rating system through Standard 189.1 for the Design of High Performance Green Buildings.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Green BuildingsBy Savas E.The book gives broaden information about one of the most popular topic: How to Design and Build a Green Office Building. Energy conservation; Sun-Heating and Cooling relation; Energy efficiency; Recyclabeles; Conventional building materials; Green building materials; General ecology knowledge and Financing the projects are the main topics discussed in the book. Also many useful web sites are added to help who wants to build or remodel according to Green Standards at present practices. Unfortunately book is not well designed but a lot of useful information in it.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. WeakBy DanCriticIt seems unlikely this book would be of any use to anyone. The actual effort required to build and remodel in an environmentally friendly manner is far more nuanced than this book conveys. It seems to have been written not by an expert; but by some amateur doing a lot of Google searches.
