Symmetry is beauty!By Pichierri FabioThe Hargittais have written a very nice book (now in its 3rd edition) about molecular symmetry as interpreted by research chemists. The book. however. explains symmetry by taking as examples many objects that we see in our everyday life. such as flowers. stairs. sculptures. etc. This is quite helpful and. in addition. tells the reader that symmetry is a universal concept that is not limited to the molecular world. The chapters on group theory. the mathematical theory that deals with the properties of symmetric objects. are very instructive although a bit difficult for the the layman. The final chapters are devoted to the study of chemical reactions which are governed by symmetry. molecular vibrations. and crystals.
