Symmetry is beauty!By Pichierri FabioThe Hargittais have written a very nice book (now in its 3rd edition) about molecular symmetry as interpreted by research chemists. The book. however. explains symmetry by taking as examples many objects that we see in our everyday life. such as flowers. stairs. sculptures. etc. This is quite helpful and. in addition. tells the reader that symmetry is a universal concept that is not limited to the molecular world. The chapters on group theory. the mathematical theory that deals with the properties of symmetric objects. are very instructive although a bit difficult for the the layman. The final chapters are devoted to the study of chemical reactions which are governed by symmetry. molecular vibrations. and crystals. Every chemist should read this book although many others. students and non-scientists alike. will also benefit from the information contained in it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Ive 10+ books on symmetry but this one tops them all!By Peter KruminsThis is the most delightful book on symmetry ever written. Ive more than 10 books on symmetry but this one tops them all. This book presents symmetry through the eyes of professor Istvan Hargittai and his wife. Hes down to earth and actually understands what scientifically curious people want to know about symmetry. This book is not for beginners (like most books on symmetry) and its not for PhDs. Its right in the middle accessible to everyone with a little bit of education.Hargittais fascination for symmetry extends beyond the chemistry realm. He presents symmetry from an unusually broad perspective in a much wider sense than that in which it appears in geometry and chemistry. He starts with simplest symmetries. proceeds to group theory and other math that is used in symmetry. and then goes all in to molecular chemistry. exploring chemical reactions which are governed by symmetry. molecular vibrations. crystals. and infinite symmetries. This book has more than 1000 illustrations and math is only used where necessary.Ive placed this book #30 in my Top 100 Mathematics.
