Teenage Kicks: My Life as an Undertone

[ebooks] Teenage Kicks: My Life as an Undertone by Michael Bradley at Arts-Photography

Description

For all fans of John Hughes and his hit films such as National Lampoonrsquo;s Vacation; Sixteen Candles; and Home Alone; comes Jason Diamondrsquo;s hilarious memoir of growing up obsessed with the iconic filmmakerrsquo;s moviesmdash;a preoccupation that eventually convinces Diamond he should write Hughesrsquo; biography and travel to New York City on a quest that is as funny as it is hopeless. For as long as Jason Diamond can remember; hersquo;s been infatuated with John Hughesrsquo; movies. From the outrageous; raunchy antics in National Lampoonrsquo;s Vacation to the teenage angst in The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink to the insanely clever and unforgettable Home Alone; Jason could not get enough of Hughesrsquo; films. And so the seed was planted in his mind that it should fall to him to write a biography of his favorite filmmaker. It didnrsquo;t matter to Jason that he had no qualifications; training; background; platform; or direction. Thus went the years-long; delusional; earnest; and assiduous quest to reach his goal. But no book came out of these years; and no book will. What he did get was a story that fills the pages of this unconventional; hilarious memoir. In Searching for John Hughes; Jason tells how a Jewish kid from a broken home in a Chicago suburbmdash;sometimes homeless; always restlessmdash;found comfort and connection in the likewise broken lives in the suburban Chicago of John Hughesrsquo; oeuvre. He moved to New York to become a writer. He started to write a book he had no business writing. In the meantime; he brewed coffee and guarded cupcake cafes. All the while; he watched John Hughes movies religiously.Though his original biography of Hughes has long since been abandoned; Jason has discovered he is a writer through and through. And the adversity of going for broke has now been transformed into wisdom. Or; at least; a really; really good story. In other words; this is a memoir of growing up. One part big dream; one part big failure; one part John Hughes movies; one part Chicago; and one part New York. Itrsquo;s a story of what comes after the ldquo;Go for it!rdquo; part of the command to young creatives to pursue their dreamsmdash;no matter how absurd they might seem at first.

The book is by the direct descendants and they have invaluable insight to the history of the that beautiful meeting of the forest and the sea. A good book for anyone that has ever visited the Point Lobos area.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Four StarsBy BillIt adds background to the hike I made.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully constructed...By Addison PhillipsI grew up in Carmel; just a few miles from Point Lobos; with family roots in the area; so I thought I knew the history of Point Lobos. Such a beautiful; gem-like block of land; it has attracted the attention of artists for many decades; most notably Ed Weston. It turns that the history is both deeper and richer than I knew; and I owe my knowledge of it to this book.It isnt about the beauty of the landscape but rather the history of the people who dwelt there; used the land; and ultimately preserved it. It puts faces and names to the place and demonstrates what a near-run thing it was to have this land preserved at all. This book presents both the beauty and the people using small amounts of carefully written text paired with many; many well-chosen historical photographs. If you live near or have a love of Point Lobos and the middle California coast; then I think youll find this a fascinating addition to your library or coffee table.
