This book is not a go-to handbook for technique (although there is some insight into his teaching and how it is implemented in the actors work). but rather a beautifully written and marvelously inspirational treatise on what acting is. why its important. and all the things Mr. Howard has learned and accomplished in his long and illustrious life in the theater. Representing a direct line to those legends of the past that were his colleagues -- Meisner. Hagen. Strasbourg. even Martha Graham -- Howard expounds. expands. and exposes what is needed to accomplish that delicate and challenging work of being an actor. Its an absolute delight and so smart. For the student and the professional alike.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. His reflections on his 70 plus years in the business are a must read for any actor. I found myself weeping as he reflected to me what it means to have chosen this acting profession.
