Good book but Kindle version poorly producedBy QuaksalberThis is a fascinating study of some of the most important sound recordings in the history of music. What a disgrace that the images of the notated musical examples that were expertly transcribed with such care are so tiny. If you magnify them to a useable size; the resolution is so miserable that its an unreadable blur. On top of this; many of the hyperlinks to the images dont actually work and the Kindle instead gives you the dictionary definition of "Example" every time! The author obviously went to a great deal of effort in creating this book. Shame on OUP for such a shoddy job. This is; at least; not quite as bad as the prestigious American university presses that dont even include the images in their Kindle versions and instead insult the purchaser with the line: "Please refer to the print edition of this book for the image." If I had access to the physical book in the first place; why would I have bothered buying the ebook?!2 of 7 people found the following review helpful. DisappointingBy john gartonIm a long-time jazz fan but this book was a problem for me. I love all the Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings but Im not a technical animal. That means I didnt understand a lot of this book; which was a great pity. I also found it not particularly well written. Sorry; Mr. Harker!0 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Louis Makes HistoryBy Allen JonesLouis Armstrongs small group recordings (Hot Five and Hot Seven) revolutionized popular music in America. When other groups featured short solos amid ensemble playing; Louis power; clarity; and originality redefined the role of the soloist in popular music. His ideas were years ahead of his contemporaries. Had he never played a session after the Hot Five/Hot Seven recordings; his place in Jazz History would have been assured. These recordings have been cleaned up and the quality is amazing.
