The Art of City Making

[PDF] The Art of City Making by Charles Landry in Arts-Photography

Description

These are the guitars so famous that their names are often household words: B. B. Kingrsquo;s Lucille; Eric Claptonrsquo;s Blackie; Stevie Ray Vaughanrsquo;s First Wife; Billy F Gibbonsrsquo; Pearly Gates; Neil Youngrsquo;s Old Black; and many more. Herersquo;s the first-ever illustrated history of the actual guitars of the stars that made the music. Other best-selling guitar histories look at the rank-and-file models; but this book is unique in profiling the actual ldquo;star guitarsrdquo;mdash;the million-dollar babies; such as the 1968 Stratocaster that Jimi Hendrix burned at Woodstock; which sold at Sothebyrsquo;s auction house in 1993 for $1;300;000. Amateurs buy guitars to emulate the starsmdash;Claptonrsquo;s Strat; Slashrsquo;s Les Paulmdash;and this book explains the starsrsquo; modifications; thus showing how others can recreate those famous tones.

On how to become a better cityBy Jan KlerksIf you are looking for a check list or the dos and donts on how to become a better city. this book is not for you. In a way Landry is more of an urban psychiatrist whos challenging cities and their inhabitants to make up their own minds on how to become a better urban society. The book is chock full of examples. stories and insights on the matter (hence the size) which a well informed Landry uses to picture the bigger and positive image without being pushy about anything. although the being creative gets a bit repeative after a while. All in all the book is an easy to read and feel good story about cities that want or should want to be a good city.
