If you are new to oil painting. this is the book you want to own. The reader is first shown the basic tools used in painting; canvasses. brushes. knives and paints etc. then a short lesson on composition. perspective and use and blending of colors is included. The main part of the book is composed of the individual methods used by 10 well known artists. Each artist shows and explains how he builds a painting. including the blending of pigments and color in 5 steps. Each artist has his own style. allowing the reader to examine the various methods to choose from when attempting his or her own work. The subject matter is diverse. including landscapes. still lifes. architectural scenes and some portraits. The bulk of them. however. are landscapes.I am not new to oil painting but its been a long time since I last worked in oil. This book has refreshed my memory giving me some insight into painting techniques I had forgotten. This book is mainly for the new or novice painter. though anyone swinging a paint brush could learn a thing or two from its pages.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. ... The quality on this is excellent with lots of reproductions. It gives you some general tips on drawing and painting. then has ten award-winning artists lead you through step-by-step paintings. The only problem is these are advanced painters and beyond my level. I would have trouble following some of their instructions. and I didnt like some of their styles. Just look on the images listed. (the back cover) and see how complex the vase and flowers are. Some of the artists I did like and their instructions were helpful. Still. a lot of useful information and I will buy more Walter Foster books. this just would not be my first choice.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. not for beginnersBy birdmomsome helpful tips--but not a lot. This is better for intermediate painters who can use what is here for personal experimentation. Not so much for beginners.
