I was encouraged by the positive reviews and was looking for a book that honed my beginner skills so that I could take better pictures of my beautiful newborn daughter. This book was just what I was looking for and is a cut above the rest of the other childrens photography books I have read.Pros:* I like that Wasmuth talks *to* you; not down to you. She presents ideas and insight for pictures that anyone can take. She gives realistic advice for those who cant afford all the bells and whistles (and even those that can) and focuses on the actuality of how to get the best shot while still having fun. In fact; she empahasizes the point of having fun when you take photos. Even better; the book is not full of highly technical verbage. The book is easy to read and follow. I actually read it cover to cover because it was so well written and concise. The language is written as if you were having a conversation with a friend; which makes this book ideal for those of us mommies (or daddies) without a lot of time!* The book is organized thoughtfully and thoroughly. Each section is separated into specific sections to give you help with lighting and composition; and she makes each chapter easy to understand and follow. The pictures in each section are colorful and bright and diverse--they are not just the same boring shot over and over again used to demonstrate a shot. Each picture is like its own story and this adds to the overall value of the book. You will be referring to the ideas over and over again.* She gives examples on where to place subjects; where to take shots; what time of day; the kind of light that best captures the subjects; the importance of the rule of thirds; how to capture the spirit of a person versus just getting a "good shot" etc. This is the heart of what makes this book so awesome. It is an invaluable asset to beginners who want to go out and capture some great shots; but dont want to have to dig through a giant manual and minimalistic explanations. She demonstrates how to set the scene; how to avoid common mistakes; and presents beautiful pictures that boldly demonstrate her points. Ive had several "aha" moments while reading this book.Cons:* I dont feel this book would benefit experienced photographers as much--but realistically; I dont forsee a professional; semi-professional; or even someone who knows a ton about photography would seek out a book like this to begin with. This is one of the best photography books I have read in a long time. The information is helpful; insightful; and provides tips and tricks to capturing the heart of your subjects. I definitely recommend this book to everyone as a great book or even a gift.32 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Cant go wrong with this one!By J. KelleyAs the child and family photographer behind janeenkelley.com photography; I can honestly say that Ive bought EVERY child photography book out there. Like many women; my passive interest in photography sky-rocketed with the birth of my first child; so many of these books were purchased with the sole intent of taking the best photos possible of my little monkey. Of these; I cant say one or two didnt dole out a decent piece of advice here or there; but the information was mostly topical; discussing subjects like filling the frame and using the rule of thirds. For the most part; I felt that Id paid $18-$25 for a book of information I could have gotten for free on the internet (albiet; with a little digging). Overall; I was left uninspired. Then I found this book! And while I admit I purchased it more out of professional curiosity; I can say that being pleasently suprised doesnt quite sum up how impressive this book is; all the way around.Of all the books streaming along the bottom of this page in the similar items category; this is the book you should buy. Why? For one its literally PACKED with information--nearly 300 pages worth-- is rich with beautiful; inspiring; full color photos; and shares the camera settings and best ways to acheive what you see on the page. The book contains enough information that a more experienced photographer will find useful; but does so in a way that doesnt intimidate the newbie; which is a major plus. It also gives a fresh and modern take on whats happeneing in the photography world right now.As photography does follow its trends; Ive found the many of the other books used images that many would consider dated and generally old fashioned in feel (and not in the cool vintage-y way) which contributed to my overall feeling of being bamboozled. But dont be misled into thinking this book is simply trend either. Rather; imagine the analogy of stainless steel to kitchen appliances. Sure its hot right now; but it will also never really go out of style either! The ideas are classic and fresh and totally inspire you to go out and shoot; believing that your photos can capture the same magic and wonder. As a side note; I was also suprised and super excited to find that throughout the book were treated to tips and tricks from well known and respected photographers in the field. How cool to browse through the pages and find brief interviews with photographers whose work Ive been following on blogs for years now! Overall; this book is inspiring and fun and a must read for every mom (even if it does wind up putting me out of business)!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Inspiration!By Gillian HerrleThis was definitely such a fun book to look through! I am a professional photographer and lifestyle blogger ( at comesincolours.blogspot.com ) so I didnt really feel like I got a whole lot technically out of this book. I realized that going into it and wanted this book more as wonderful inspiration and it certainly fulfilled its purpose! I would highly recommend this book to moms and / or bloggers who are looking to better their photography. This book is full of excellent tips and wonderful photography to ooh and ahh over! I love that the photography in this book is trendy and up to date! It can be so hard to find books like this in stores or at the library!
