Wildlife. etc)...everything from the older Shaw books to new digital books such as this one. This book has a lot of good information. I enjoyed the mentoring style of the book and thought the LCD (Lighting. Composition and Digital(Eposure) approach to each of the sub topics was well presented. There are good ideas for assignments also.I only have one fairly minor flaw with the book and it is a rather subjective one...while the photos in the book were good examples of the topics being discussed. not a lot of them were jaw dropping and inspiring to me personally. Obviously this is a subjective point and others may disagree. After reading the Shaw and Audubon and acouple of digital nature books prior to this one. the photos in this book just didnt wow me as much as the others I have read.I dont feel the above is enough for me to knock the book down to a 4 star so I am still giving it a 5 star rating although if there was a 4.5 star option. I would probably select that.Dont get me wrong. though. I still feel this is quite a worthwhile book to buy. The approach is friendly. encouraging and refreshing and the author obviously knows his stuff and has produced a good book. One further note...I also liked the fact that this book is definitly about nature photography and doesnt spend an over-abundance of time on generic photography priniciples that one has more than likely picked up from other general photography books. Some nature books are general photography books with a splash of nature thrown in. This one is a nature photography book with just the right amount general photography thrown in. An honest approach to a nature photography book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful. well-organized. practical guideBy K. WilkinsThere were so many things to love about this book. Im almost not sure where to start. I suppose what jumped out at me the most was how practical the advice was. There are checklists of the most important things to remember from each section; little boxes with advice on practical concerns such as bringing camera gear out into the elements; and "assignment" sections that suggest ways to practice new techniques right away. I was most excited about the assignments so I was especially pleased that these were all included in the index. making them easy to refer back to.This brings me to the second great thing about this book... the organization. First there are sections on three of the basics of photography: lighting. composition. and exposure. Each of these sections included some general guidelines (the rule of thirds or complementary colors for example). While you might be thinking that you know these already. I did too and I still found these sections extremely useful. The author gives beautiful. clear examples of each technique in use. He also expands on these guidelines with suggestions I hadnt heard before (using the rule of thirds by choosing either your foreground or the sky to take up two-thirds of the picture. for example). And finally. he wraps up each section with examples of times when breaking the rules is the right thing to do.After the three basic sections. there are sections devoted specifically to landscapes. macro photograph. and wildlife. Each of these sections includes more specific advice in each of the basic categories. even giving camera settings the author most often uses for these types of photography. Personally. what I most took away from this book was the need for planning photography expeditions and picking one subject to devote a lot of time to. I tend to squeeze photography in where ever I am and whenever I have time for it. Taking this authors advice to heart. I think I could really benefit from some more thoughtful photography. For other photographers. while you might need this book less than I did. I strongly suspect that anyone other than a professional photographer would take away something new from reading this book. Highly recommended.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. WONDERFUL.WONDERFUL.WONDERFULBy Old DudeGreat book to learn from I have a lot of the books in the series. I have used the books to learn photography. The format is very good I like the fact that at the end of each lesson you have an assignment or two to do. The books are easy to understand not complicated written for the average joe on the street and filed with lots of encouragement. The books are written by professionals. so the person knows the subject they are writing about. I use the books also for reference so dont get ride of them when you finish it. I have been using the book for the past 3 years. ( Amphoto books are wonderful) 3 years a go I wanted to learn Photography not just take pictures so I tried to find a class. could not. But with this book and the others in the series I put together a course of study for myself to take me to were I want to be.
