Unusual approach to history of operaBy Robin E HooperAn entertaining and scholarly book which situates each opera in the musical world of its time. mainly through examining the correspondence. diaries and interactions of the people involved in its creation. These of course are primarily the composer and librettist. but there are also interesting glimpses of other notable figures. such as Schoenberg in the chapter on Wozzeck. The many quotations are fascinating; highlights are Mozarts correspondence with his father. and Wagners feverish diaries and letters during the composition of Tristan. Roses prose is clear and elegant. his translations of French and Italian sources are lively and idiomatic. and his dry wit is most engaging. I found this book compelling reading. Because of the narrative approach. each chapter becomes a little drama with the performance of the opera as its denouement. By the end felt I had learnt much about the history of the development of opera. Best of all. the discussion kept compelling me to pull out a CD and listen to it.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Essential Opera Lovers BookBy IlmusicoThis is superb. Every essay will only increase your understanding and appreciation of the opera he is discussing and the creative process that brought it into being. There is not a wasted word. no extraneous information. There hasnt been anything this good since Ernest Newman or Julian Budden.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A marvelous bookBy seebyrdieI highly recommend this well-researched. informative book that tells the stories of fifteen composers travails from the inception to the ultimate production of one of their operas. Its an engaging page-turner that is well suited for an opera lover like me who knows nothing about music. I enjoyed this book so very much that Ive purchased several copies for gifts.
