Description

August Macke lived during a mostly innovative time for German art and saw the development of the German Expressionist movements as well as the arrival of the following avant-garde movements which were forming in the rest of Europe. Like a true artist of his time; Macke knew how to integrate into his painting the elements of the avant-garde which most interested him. His style was formed within the mode of French Impressionism and Post-impressionism and later went through a Fauve period. Mackes meeting with Robert Delaunay in Paris in 1912 was to be a sort of revelation for him. Delaunays chromatic Cubism; which Apollinaire had called Orphism. August Mackes oeuvre can be considered as Expressionism and also as part of Fauvism. The paintings concentrate primarily on expressing feelings and moods rather than reproducing objective reality; usually distorting color and form.

She and her co-author; Steven Vastola have brought to the reading public what Bristol was like from the beginnings of a small hamlet to the city that it is today. The images of people and places will only bring back memories to former and current residents. How many Mum Festival Parades have you been to? Bristol was once home to many clock manufacturing companies and the collector of these will be glad to see the images of the places where they were made as well as the role their founders played in the society they lived in. Bristol is fortunate to have such a gifted historian capture its essence in pictures and words. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words and this is so true.
