Around Utica features the work of A. J. Manning; who traveled with his camera through picturesque central New York in the early 1900s. Manning recorded historic events; such as Sherman Notification Day in 1908; honoring William Howard Tafts vice presidential nominee James Schoolcraft Sherman; catastrophes; such as the fires at Utica Free Academy and the YMCA; and nostalgic scenes of everyday life. His images were produced in small quantities as real-photo postcards; which today are quite rare and much sought after by collectors.

The Kindle edition makes this history book available in a modern format which makes it more accessible to readers such as myself who are shying away from the paperback format. The book content covers the history of the home and property through several prominent families prior to Carl Sandburg which illuminated the historical roots of Flatrock to Charleston. There are also many historic pictures which the reader can enlarge with pinch and pull. an iPad feature that is better than the printed page. I hope that many more local archive histories with convert to Kindle versions so they wont be lost on the back shelves of local libraries.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
