Nestled among the rolling hills of the Mohawk Valley; the town of Rotterdam was formed in 1820 from the Third Ward of the city of Schenectady. Its history; chronicled in Rotterdams two hundred images; begins much earlier and is essentially the story of people past and present. The original settlers; mostly of Dutch origin; turned the wilderness into farmland. Their descendants and those who followed expanded into other livelihoods; producing goods that were shipped first along the Erie Canal and later across the nation by rail.

Excellent Photo History of a Notable UniversityBy William J. ShepherdExcellent historical overview of The Catholic University of America (CUA) using mostly photographs from the universitys archives highlighted by the authors lively prose descriptions. As both an alumni and local native. Robert Malesky brings both a keen eye and a sharp wit to this endeavor. This book is a great compliment to Fred Maroons 1990 CUA centennial celebration photo book and will join it on the short list of the best books about the universitys history. There is one error of note though. on page 106. in mentioning Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. he states "In 1930. he began his radio program. The Catholic Hour. which drew an audience in the millions." Sheen may have thought it was his show. and certainly acted like it was at times. but. in actuality. The Catholic Hour featured many speakers through the years and was produced by the National Catholic Welfare Conference (the former United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) together with the now defunct National Council of Catholic Men.
