The Chicago Bungalow

[DOC] The Chicago Bungalow by Chicago Architecture Foundation in Arts-Photography

Description

Lincoln University was founded in 1866 for the education of freed blacks after the Civil War. This book focuses on the years between 1920 and 1970; a span of time during which many of the universitysmost signifi cant developments occurred. During this period; Lincoln Institute was elevated to university status; and graduate programs were added to the curriculum. A court-ordered law school was established and graduated many accomplished and respected African American attorneys before disbanding in the 1950s. During this era; the university was often referred to as "the Harvard of the Midwest" due to the acclaimed reputation of its faculty. Many alumni have made outstanding contributions at local; state; and national levels. After the 1954 United States Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision; the university integrated its student body. As a result; student enrollment changed dramatically from all black to a signifi cantly white clientele. Today the university retains its designation as a historicallyblack college/university.

Interesting but not what I thought.By Jennifer VianelloI was hoping for a book about bungalow structures and development of the style with examples. etc. Although this book touched on this. it spent much more time discussing the neighborhoods and their development in the bungalow belt. Although this was still a very interesting read. it was not what I anticipated. Also. why an entire chapter on the Portage Park neighborhood? There are other neighborhoods equally qualified to focus on...but it really wasnt necessary to focus on any one at all. Also. I feel that the photos could have been more representative of bungalows actually located in Chicago. Many of the best photos of the bungalow form are located in the surrounding suburbs. such as Berwyn. which dont even qualify for the benefits of the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association. Again. its a good read if youre interested in learning about neighborhoods that contain Chicago bungalows. but just okay if youre looking for a book about the Chicago bungalow form.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Bungalow in ChicagoBy Bob LGreat photos. I only wish there were more. Effort was to be a complete history of the bungalow and it is successful. I would have preferred more of a coffee table book of pictures.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great source of local Southside historyBy Jordannever had the chance to own a bungalow in the Marquette park neighborhood. it flipped to quick. But I sure still admire them.
