The context described is that of the keepers of the Houses of Refuge established by the US Life Saving Service (now part of the US Coast Guard). The objective was to save the lives of passengers and crew of vessels wrecked off the Atlantic coast of Florida. It will be particularly interesting for those who now live along the east coast of Florida and those who have an interest in the history of the Coast Guard. The many photographs throughout the text bring the text alive and give a good account of those pioneer days.
