Five stars. mdash; biblio-filerIn addition to a world-wide depression and the rise of Fascism throughout Europe; the years between 1929 and 1938 witnessed dramatic changes in womens fashion. With the turning of the decade; the free and easy fashions of the Roaring Twenties shifted to a softer; more conservative look; with an emphasis on curves rather than angles. Hemlines plummeted almost overnight and did not begin to rise until mid-decade.These selections from full-color French catalogs produced for the international market from 1929 through 1938 document the changes in fashion from the time of the stock market crash to the dawn of World War II. More than 100 images of day and evening wear illustrate the movement from flapper fashions to a more austere look. Fashion designers; costume historians; costumers; and anyone who loves fashion will treasure this richly illustrated survey."A must for anyone interested in fashion and costume; this book offers exactly what the title suggests mdash; a decade of French fashion; portrayed in beautiful illustrations from contemporary catalogues. Review
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Development of the Art Market in EnglandBy HawthorneAs an unlikely companion to the books on the end-table of a small business owner with a very limited knowledge of either Art History or Economics. Thomas Bayer and John Pages The Development of the Art Market in England provides an intriguing perspective of the forces that shaped the art-world during the period sited. and by inference. those that continue to exert force today. The construction of their argument and its lucid language not only makes the subject accessible to the layman. but engaging. The work inspires one to consider the impact of a culture that celebrates it innovators/creators to excess. while neglecting the mechanisms that establish and support the infrastructure that directs its development.By adding a previously unseen component in the form of the art dealer to the archetypical vision of the lone artist with a paintbrush standing before the canvas. the book and its interpretation of the collected data reframe my assumptions of the role of the inspired innovator. The function of those who move the Market on what is produced within this specific context establishes obvious and important parallels between this an nearly any other market. including my role within my own business community. Quite simply. the book is a real pleasure read and contemplate.
