The Red and the Black covers the major stages in the history of Greek pottery production; both figured and plain; as they are understood today. It provides an up-to-date evaluation of ways of studying Greek pottery and encourages new approaches. There is a detailed analysis of the subject matter of figured scenes covering some of the main preoccupations of ancient Greece: myth; fantasy and everyday life. Furthermore; it sets the artefacts in the context of the societies that produced them; highlighting the social; art historical; mythological and economic information that can be revealed from their study. This volume also covers a hitherto neglected area: the history of the collecting of Greek pottery through the Renaissance and up to the present day. It shows how market values have gradually increased to the high prices of today and goes on to take a closer look at the enthusiasm of the collectors.

SuperBy BJSThe German DTV edition is by far the best on the market. DTV is a large German publisher and this edition is the same you get in Germany so dont bother with anything else. The story itself is great; a man who will stop at nothing; not even making a deal with the devil to get in this world what he wants. One of the most famous and memorable sentences from the story is: Augenblick; du bist so schoen; verweile doch ein bischen! Its something most of us have felt at some time when faced with the fleeting nature of bliss. Some other great works of German literature I love are Der Kouml;nig von Akim: und andere Geschichten (German Edition); Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts (German Edition) and Bissula (German Edition).See my list "Great German Books".18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Book~By jon doeAlthough mentioned in the description that this is a pre 1923 photo-reproduction; it hadnt occurred to me that the type font would be an old Gothic style. This significantly extends the time required to read this book. FYI
