However; Rick Butler doesnt quite deliver the goods. I wondered what it felt like to be in a band that was that good; had that many great songs; and to miss by an inch. And there had to be a reason why a band that good couldnt break into the USA in a big way; like so many lesser talents were able to do. My own recollection of it was; they did not put in the work; grinding it out on the road. They were already big in the UK but they would have needed to be an opening act for at least a year in the US. Instead they parachuted into a few big markets; in and out; and back to their comfort level. Paul Wellers father was the bands manager; which would have been helpful before they had a record deal; but theres not a chance in hell he would have been able to navigate business at the level they found themselves. Buckler never gets into where that disconnect happened. The Jam should have been something that carried Rick Butler for the duration; instead he ends up in a Jam tribute band. But there was not the slightest insight into what that was like. He just keeps holding back. And maybe thats very British; but I purchased a book and I wanted to know. In any case; the story of a band that was so much fun to listen to ended up being a very sad story.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Rick is greatBy Jim HarrisLove that he went into the early punk years. They were different but the speed and passion with how they played (due to and in no small part Rick) put them right into the punk scene and then they developed into Britains top band.
