The Europeanization of Cinema: Interzones and Imaginative Communities

[ePub] The Europeanization of Cinema: Interzones and Imaginative Communities by Randall Halle at Arts-Photography

Description

Gendered Frames; Embodied Cameras: Varda; Akerman; Cabrera; Calle; and Maiuml;wenn is the first book to link these five filmmakers together through an analysis of the relationship between filming onersquo;s own body and the creative body. Through engaged artistic practices; these female filmmakers turn the camera to their bodies as a way to show the process of artistic creation and to produce themselves as filmmakers and artists in their work from 1987ndash;2009. By making visible their bodies; they offer a wider range of representation of women in French film. Through avant-garde form; in which tangible corporeal elements are made image; they transform representational content and produce new cinematic bodies with the power to influence signifying practices in contemporary French culture. By rendering visible their artistic practice and praxis and their camera in their workmdash;reflexive practices that also unite these filmmakersmdash;these women also visually claim the role of filmmaker and creative subject. Thus they establish their authority in a film industry in which womenrsquo;s participation and recognition of their achievements have historically been lower than that of their male counterparts.

Follies of a Hipster YouthBy David MahaffeyA companion and I read an excerpt of Wendy in The Best Comics of 2016; and we both went completely hysterical from the first page alone--which contained a short comic named "Wendy on a Bendy." (In fact; I think the other people in the bookstore were kind of annoyed--but it was completely worth it.) Wendy wants to be a powerful artistic voice; a bearer of the culture; a visionary creative; but shes far too distracted by the allure of drugs and sex. Its really a brilliant send-up of hipster youth culture; and if youre the sort of person who gets invited to events in "art spaces" with any regularity; youre bound to recognize all the characters in this book. Im still puzzling my way through Scotts construction of race and sexuality (though not /necessarily/ in a bad way); and Im a bit nonplussed by the ending; but overall Id say its definitely worth the purchase.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
