The Future of the Page (Studies in Book and Print Culture)

[audiobook] The Future of the Page (Studies in Book and Print Culture) by From University of Toronto Press in Arts-Photography

Description

The Garden City Movement provided a radical new model for the design and layout of housing at the turn of the nineteenth century and set standards for the twentieth century which were of international significance. The vision of the movements founder; Ebenezer Howard; drew on many strands of political and utopian thought; and initially aimed at addressing the problems of an increasingly urban and dysfunctional society along the peaceful path to real reform. It took only five years; from 1898 to 1903 for the idea to take root in the open fields of North Hertfordshire; when Earl Grey proclaimed the Letchworth Garden City Estate open. Letchworth was followed by Hampstead Garden Suburb; Welwyn Garden City and numerous smaller developments; and Garden City ideas informed both inter-war housing policy and New Town planning after the Second World War. Present-day issues such as sustainable development and eco-settlements have their roots in the Garden City. Written by the leading authority in the field; this book tells the story of a major development in Englands urban and planning history and provides a timely popular survey of the achievements of the Garden City Movement and the challenge of change. This will not only appeal to planners and conservation professionals; but also residents of the garden cities.

Great trip down Memorie LaneBy Andrew VancottWent to Lake George every summer and remember very well the places mentioned in this book thru the travel brochures that we picked up. Unfortunately the only one i can remember going to is Storytown so the others mentioned were a real treat for me. I was sorry that no mention was made of Gaslight Village but i guess that was for adults as well as kids. Thank goodness we have the trips to Storytown preserved on home movies and pictures. All in all it is a great book.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Kiddie Parks of the AdirondacksBy P. MasnatoI spent a few summers in Lake George with my family and I will never forget going to Storytown. The stories surrounding Storytown;Magic Forest; Land of Make Believe; Santas Workshop and the Enchanted Forest are interesting and bring back memories that I will never forget. Thanks to all who had the imagination way before Walt Disney to entertain children in the 1950s- to present day.
