Beethovens Ninth Symphony is acknowledged as one of the supreme masterpieces of the Western tradition. More than any other musical work it has become an international symbol of unity and affirmation. Yet early critics rejected it as cryptic and eccentric; the product of a deaf and ageing composer. Nicholas Cooks guide charts the dramatic transformation in the reception of this work. The story begins in Vienna; with the responses of listeners at the first performance; and ends in contemporary China and Japan; where the symphony has acquired diametrically opposed interpretations. The account embraces many of the major figures of nineteenth- and twentieth-century music; among them Wagner and Schenker. Including an account of the sketches; an examination of the performance tradition; and a suggested new interpretation; this book opens up new dimensions in our understanding of Beethovens last symphony.

The book emphasizes the need for contributions from exhibited cultures; deeper expertise in non-Western and minority culture; and experimental exhibition design that allows for multiple perspectives and a metacritical admission of the curatorrsquo;s agency.1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. ... this book for my thesis and its a really great selection. It gives you a good introduction to Museum Studies in general and then has some interesting case studies to flesh out more specific dynamics. Even though its a linguistics thesis; and the place Im looking at isnt quite like any of the examples; this book gives you a really good idea of the politics and complications in representation; and would probably by helpful to a wide variety of researching.4 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Author Patrick Houlihan Embezzled from Southwest MuseumBy Elizabeth_BennettSeriously? This book was recommended to me by a colleague. Had I known that the "scholarship" included an extensive essay by Patrick Houlihan who embezzled over 3 million dollars + of Native American Artifacts from the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles as well as American Paintings and Jewelry. Numerous artifacts were highly sensitive religious objects. He personally used the proceeds to purchase a home in Arizona. Not hardly an author of repute. He is a convicted felon.
